Feeding information vs Nuance

I think a lot of people by this point would have bet on me giving up and not continuing. Hell, I’m pretty sure a few people were hoping I would give up and fail. But because I’m a little crazy… I didn’t!

More than that — I’ll be writing a few more books. And if you’ve finished Nexus Crest (the first book in the series), the ending is a clear indicator that there will be much, much more.

Tonight, I’d like to talk about the mysteries in my book. I was—and still am—a little worried that some people aren’t seeing all of the mysteries or clues. The reason I want to bring this up is because there’s a HUGE separation on BookTok: feeding readers information vs. letting nuance do the work.

In my personal opinion, there are a great many nuances in my story. But that’s up to the reader to decide. As a reader myself, I felt like including both approaches would help readers while still keeping that mysterious vibe of wtf is going on, what will happen next, and so on and so forth.

One mystery that will definitely be talked about more is the mysterious item that Mommy and Daddy Vadala were so concerned about at the beginning of the book. I’m hoping some of you picked up that this item was later mentioned by Salas, and then again at Gabrielle’s desk the night she fell asleep and woke up drooling all over her face. These are all the same item. I don’t want to go into too much detail (if anything, to be honest), but this item will be popping up again — and you’ll want to pay very close attention to it.

Next mystery, and the most obvious one: WHO THE FUCK IS KILLING ALL THESE PEOPLE?!
I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on this, by the way. What are your guesses? Or are you betting that you haven’t met the killer yet? Either way, the clues lie between the lines. Nuance is very important here. I don’t want to give too much away. (Think of this as the vampire version of Pretty Little Liars, without the pedophile teacher crushing on the 15-year-old.)

In Book 2, you’ll learn much more about who this killer is—not exactly who who, but what kind of person they are. You’ll also learn that my brain is just way too messed up, and this book could honestly be categorized alone as a murder mystery. Come to think of it… maybe I should?

RELATIONSHIPS. Dear God, I really hope you all picked up on all the nuances here. I’m just so, so, so excited to reveal more in Book 2. It’s hard to keep all this information in! I want to talk about the entire series, but I just need to be patient. Book 2 dives deeper into forming closer bonds, creating new friendships, and making us wait a little longer than we’d like for what we really want (which is smut).

But when I tell you Book 2 comes through… BABY, IT COMES FUCKING THROUGH.

Now, I know this is only Book 2, Draft 1… but this scene I wrote the other day — 5 full doc pages. Do you know how many that is in book form? 10+ pages. Did you hear me? TEN MOTHER-FUCKING PLUS PAGES OF STRAIGHT, GLORIOUS SMUUUUUUUTTTTT.

Yeah. You’re welcome. You’ll be needing extra batteries and lotion. ;)

This scene, while it may just seem like smut, is actually very, very, very important. Just as relationships with others matter, the self in this story matters even more. Gabrielle is learning about herself — who she is as a vampire, who she is in her society, and what she wants. Keep an open eye… and I can’t wait for you to start drawing those red lines.

Speaking of friendships… Lex. Nuance is big here, too. I’m curious if any of you picked up on certain pieces of information about her in Nexus Crest. She doesn’t know anything about her past or who she is… but did you catch anything in those last chapters?

Last but not least… I’m scared to ask this one.
I’m scared because I don’t know if anyone picked up on these hints. I talked with two people who said they didn’t, but when I explained it — they got it.

(Have any of you read Hills Like White Elephants? Haven’t we all read pieces of literature where the characters talk around the issue, circling the big elephant in the room?)

There were a few hints I dropped, and I’m hoping that by the time Gabrielle was introduced around the altar and pronounced, you understood what those little hints were leading to…? I’m trying to talk around it because I don’t want to spoil anything. BUT. Seriously. Did y’all understand what was going on there?

Sometimes I wish I could just host a big event and ask these questions—or have readers ask me questions. I WANT to have a discussion! So please, please, please — if you have questions, or if you can answer some of mine — DROP THEM IN THE COMMENT SECTION BELOW!

Well, that’s all for tonight. I’m hoping for a better night of sleep (I haven’t been sleeping lately, and honestly, I feel a little crazier for it). Melatonin hasn’t been working — might up the dosage, lol.

Have a great night, everyone!
